Stories of Hope

Grandparents Caring for Three Children
Taking care of a household of six can be challenge in the best of times. An older couple caring for an adult daughter came in recently in need of help with their electrical bill. Due to extenuating circumstance, their three grandchildren also had recently come to live with them.

With a growing grocery bill, an unplanned move to a different trailer and other necessary expenses related to the children, their already-tight budget was stretched beyond capacity – and still the electricity bill was due. The utility company had agreed to a payment arrangement for the family and an extension (indicating a good payment history), but the family needed help to get on their feet.

How We Helped
After meeting with the GN coach, the family was able to secure assistance from an additional agency, and pay a portion of the utility bill themselves. GN covered the small remaining balance.

With information on food pantries, Welcome Table and Relative Caregiver Assistance, this family is on the road to being “on-time” with payments and safe and secure in a warm home.

Young Family Caring for Ailing Grandparent
Struggling to make ends meet, a young couple with two elementary aged sons came in with a need for utility assistance. The father is working and fortunately his future with the company looks good. The mother had been working but left her job to take care of her grandfather who is terminally ill. She will be able to return to her job when she is no longer needed as a caretaker at home.

How We Helped
GN was able to assist with the remaining portion of the utility bill and also refer the family for other assistance locally. Since the sons attend a local elementary school, this family will connect with Family Resource Center. At this time of year we were able to refer the family to Toys for Blount County as well.

Follow Up Celebrations
Sometimes “follow-up” calls come with cause for celebration and smiles! Dean was checking in with our neighbors one Monday morning and discovered an excited neighbor with a new job. This single parent had been employed in the past but had lost her job a year or more ago. Child support has become sporadic and unreliable for this neighbor. So with just the right timing, she was able to reclaim her old job at the school where she had worked previously. The good news is that she is able to work at the school her children attend and be home when they school is not in session. Income and no child care bills are bringing much relief to a very tense household!
