Below are just a few success stories about how Good Neighbors was able to provide help to those in need.
A family in our community
had fallen on pretty desperate times. They had multiple problems and “Neighbor Helping Neighbor” was trying to help them get
back on their feet. Their car had broken down and needed major repair, the family was in need of food, shelter and help with
medications for a chronic condition. Neighbor Helping Neighbor was looking for assistance. GN was able to cover the small
towing bill, NHN was able to find a mechanic willing to work with the family, secure a residence and GN was able to refer the family
to several agencies for help with food. A great collaborative effort!
A man came in seeking help with his rent. He had been ill and had recently had surgery. He worked at a local restaurant and thought his job would be waiting for him when he was released by the doctor. When he went to the doctor for his check-up he was told that he could not work for an additional two weeks and that he would be limited upon his return to lift no more than 50 pounds. With that information his employment was terminated with no hope of being rehired. Some of his family members had taken advantage of him while in the hospital and used a large part of his final paycheck. After speaking with the landlord, GN was able to cover his rent for the month helping him avoid eviction. United Way Emergency Grant Funds were used to assist this neighbor.
A young woman, recently divorced came
in for help with rent. She attended the FEMA information session and came in for her appointment with all the proper paperwork.
She works at a restaurant near her home. She eats all her meals there for free which helping her stretch her food dollars while
feeding her 3 children. All three children are honor students and the oldest cares for the other two while she works.
She struggles to make ends meet. Her hours have been cut due to the economy. GN gave her information on Angel Food, local food
pantries, Welcome Table, and the TN Career Center. Her income level allowed her to qualify for the Emergency Food and Shelter
Funds. GN was able to cover June’s rent and give her a chance to get back on her feet.
